The Arab media is abuzz with reports that a deal between Israel and Hamas which will result in the release of Gilad Shalit may be imminent, while officially, the Prime Minister’s Office is not responding. This includes reports in an eastern Jerusalem Arabic, reports in Egypt and the al-Shark al-Awsat Arabic language newspaper in London.
Nevertheless, there are confirmed reports that National Security Advisor Dr. Uzi Baram has traveled to Cairo, but Egyptian officials insist this is unrelated to the Shalit issue, but related to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s upcoming visit to the White House.
Hamas officials in Gaza deny any such fact, seeming to reject reports of an imminent deal. The parents of the soldier, Noam and Aviva Shalit, told the media they are unaware of any new deal that is about to be signed between Israel and Hamas. Shimon Libman, who heads the Free Shalit Campaign, states that he is aware of monumental efforts by the current Israeli administration to obtain Gilad’s release.
