#HireTheWives – New Initiative to Get American Kollel Wives Jobs in Israel

picture-64“…So in the mornings I just sleep until its time to make lunch, looking forward to the afternoons when I’ll get my ice coffee from Sams…”

“…I work at some Israeli woman’s home cutting material and gluing bows onto headbands…”

“…I twiddle my pinky fingers because variety is the spice of life…”

“…I get tons of Limud Hatorah Zechusim as I wait anxiously by the door for what seems like an eternity, for my husband to return from Seder…”

Well, If that’s what occupies your day in Israel, what was your day like when you lived in America?

“…I went to college every day and taught three times a week…”

“…I worked as an office secretary…”

“…I worked as the Administrator of a medical referral agency and oversaw all case loads while coordinating the office tasks…

“…I worked as a travel agent, drew graphic design, moonlighted as a tour operator and went to PA school at night…”

So many girls are living in Eretz Yisroel through the kindness and generosity of their parents so that their husbands can sit and learn without any financial worries, yet they themselves are desperately, dangerously bored.

  1. I think it is great if the wives work if they want. But, how can a Jew be bored? This is a tremendous waste of their bais yaakov and seminary education. They can learn parsha with meforshim, other sifrei tanach, halacha. There might even be chesed organizations that can use English speaking volunteers (assuming their conversational Ivrit isn’t too good). These women aren’t bored because they don’t have jobs, they are bored because they don’t have self-respect and a sense of being a Jew.

  2. Sounds like a dream…. i bust my back working full time and mamish struggle to steal a few minutes here and there to learn. My wife goes through gehinom working in this country as a teacher. She often has to pull near all nighters doing grading and reports and barely gets to spend any time with the kids where she isnt exhausted and we still cant finish the month. If these girls are so bored let them spend a few hours at the kotel eveyday in thanks that their husbands are able to learn and they have such a relatively stress free stay at home life!!!

  3. And what about us wives in Israel who are not getting supported by generous parents and in laws? Who are in eretz Israel because we believe in supporting our husbands in learning. We are by no means bored, but we could use jobs that are paying what we would be payed if we were there. We have the skill and know how, but we are just lacking the jobs. So yes, hire the wives! But think of us too, possibly think of us first- we actually need the money to survive.

  4. I would reccomend going to ulpan. Not knowing Hebrew cuts one out of 99% of jobs available.

In any case – knowing Hebrew will enhance ones davening & learning.

  5. This is a great article. I would like to point out that there is a wonderful new initiative founded recently by R’ and Mrs. Ariel Hausman called “The Chabura” that provides a wonderful schedule of shiurim for women. Check it out at thechabura.org!!!
