Homeless Offered Free Airfare To Leave NYC

bloomberg2.jpgParis? Orlando? San Juan? New York City is buying one-way plane tickets for homeless families to leave the city.

It’s part of a Bloomberg administration program to keep the homeless out of the expensive shelter system, which costs $36,000 a year per family. More than 550 families have left the city since 2007. All it takes is for a relative to agree to take them in.

According to nyc.gov, the official Web site of city government, more than 35,000 people are currently in shelters in and around the city.

The city employs a travel agency to book one-way tickets for domestic travel and the Department of Homeless Services handles all international travel.

City officials say there are no limits on where a family can be sent and families can reject the offer and stay in city shelters.

So far, families have been sent to 24 states and 5 continents, mostly to Puerto Rico, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

City officials say none of the relocated families have returned to city shelters.

  1. This is all part of the scheme to get all poorer people, elderly, disabled people out of the city. This way the city will need to provide less medicaid service, food stamps, section 8 etc. They can raise the rents and real estate taxes more and lower the crime rate, thereby hiring less police. It is a way to get only the well-to-do to reside in NYC and throw everyone else out,who will then become homeless and jobless with nowhere to go.Very compassionate, indeed!

  2. Good Morning Israeli Government!!! Take a hint from New York!!! Give all the “palestinians” a ONE way ticket OUT OF ISRAEL to where ever they want to go (with the understanding that they will NOT be let back in!) What a savings it will be, – in money, – and more importantly – IN LIVES!!!

  3. A one way ticket for illegal Mexicans back to Mexico would not be a more frugal plan? How much do the homeless drain our resources as compared to illegal Mexicans who do not pay taxes, send their kids to our schools, use our medical charity care funds and receive coverage that is suppose to go to our low-income citizens, obtain legal documents (DL) via fraud, receive social services for housing and utilities, and contribute to the expense of 1/3 of the prison population and to overall gang violence…etc..etc.

I would think the Mayor would come up with a better idea.

  4. I agree with the mayor. One of the biggest runups of costs in the Medicaid system is insuring the medical needs of the illegal immigrant.

  5. Many homeless are that way because they lost their livelyhood, or they are mentally ill. Some choose that way of life. I don’t think this will sove the problem. Get rid of the illegals first.

  6. Send out the illegals who are homeless and take care of our people, our citizens and legal immigrants. Send the criminals out. The good people should not be made to suffer more.If someone who is on welfare or homeless chooses to get a free trip to a destination of his choice, fine.

  7. $3000 a month for housing. Why not ship them upstate where housing costs are less.

Even better, we should ban all illegals, since it is soundly based on Biblical precedent. And after all, everyone says New York is the modern equivalent of Sodom, so there’s a good precedent.
The big problem is what if the righteous people escape to New Jersey – they’ll never fit in there.

  8. No one can say the Democratic party is unified regarding Washington, D.C. and NY.

Federally, the very wealthy get a bail-out to ensure their multi-million dollar bonuses.

Municipally, the very poor get a one way ticket to Palookaville.

  9. What to stop these guys from accepting the generous offer and going home for a weeks and then sneaking in again at the Mexican border? It happens every day at the border.

  10. I dont see where the article says this is for illegal Mexicans. They are not homeless, either, as they keep 100% of their earnings and get subsidized by you and I for school, medical, social services, housing, and take charity, to boot.

  11. Hey,

If any of you are thinking about making Aliyah, move to a homeless shelter first and then get your airfare for free!! Get something from your tax dollars before Obama takes it all….

  12. TO ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO DEPORT ILLEGALS:
The gemora in Sanhedrin (109b) says that one of the Rishus of the people of Sodom was that they did not want foreigners coming to their land, because they were wealthier than their neighbors, and were afraid that they’ll get poorer if the foreigners move in. According to the Ramban in parshas Vayerah (dibur hamaschil “vened’ah osam”), despite the fact that the Sodomites committed many aveiros, what sealed their destruction was the fact that they were anti-immigration.
If you dislike the fact that illegals come to the US and dont pay taxes, then advocate the legalization of those that come to the US.
But deportation is nothing more than midas sdom!

  13. This is nothing new, nor does it return illegal aliens. For as lonh as I can remember State DSS regs allow a local agency to return people to other districts if it’s considered to be cost effective. Transportation costs can also be paid to send NY residents to another state if they can verify that they have housing and a means of support in the other state.
