Lawsuit Filed Against Jerusalem City Hall Over Collective Punishment

lawsuit2.jpgJerusalem resident Moshe Sorek has filed a lawsuit against Jerusalem City Hall on Sunday in the Jerusalem District Court for what he calls the collective punishment of residents following the riots of recent weeks.

Sorek explains that when one calls the city’s ‘106’ moked information number, one is told that “no one has any idea when the disabled traffic lights will be repaired and when other disruptions in services will be restored”.

He rejects the city’s “light-handed attitude” which resulted in the punishment of “tens of thousands of residents” who he explains were not involved in the violent protests in any fashion.

In his suit he requests the court address the urgency of the matter at hand since he feels the non-functioning traffic signals and other interruptions in services are resulting in a life-threatening situation.

In lawsuit states it represents the many residents of the “densely populated area” citing the difficult conditions and pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the areas of Kikar Shabbos, Aperion Junction and Shivtei Yisrael Junction. He documents that hundreds of thousands of men, women, children and motorized vehicles pass those areas and the lack of traffic signals without a doubt poses a life-threatening situation.

He cites last week fatal tragedy in which a 3-year-old girl was killed as a result of a fall into an open manhole and a man who attempted to rescue her is fighting for his life. This incident he states was also the fault of the city – pointing out he is trying to prevent the next tragedy from taking place.

Most of the city’s chareidi community remains opposed to the violence, adding the damage caused in the rioting was the result of a small minority of hoodlums, and there is no justification in punishing an entire community.

  1. There were signs up saying if you’re not podeh shvuyim, it’s ke’ilu you’re shofech damim. I wonder what would be said if there was an accident or worse due to the no traffic lights at major intersections. People don’t like to think that far ahead. Or not think at all.

  2. I commented here last sunday (7 days ago) that the traffic lights weren’t working and all the city has to do is send just one of their nice policemen to direct the flow of traffic at kikar shabos in order to avoid the possibility of a major accident (G-d forbid).
I am stunned to see today there is still no sign of any repairs taking place there and no policeman helping to avoid a major tragedy.
Jerusalem City Hall is showing a blatant disregard to the lives of thousands of jews who use Kikar Shabos daily.

I hope this law suit brings a quick response to force city hall to act responsibly.

  3. File a complaint with they UN. That’s what the Palestinians who support and aid the mass murder of Jews do when they are subject to “unjust” collective punishment.

  4. If it waasn’t for those “charedis hooligans” that started all these balagan with throwing stones and burning public property and because the “gedolim” didn’t say a word against them, now you all cry foul because the Iriah will not send someone to fix the lights because they are afraid of getting hurt just like the people that work by the tipa chalav in meah shearim or the geulah that were treated by the same people that come for “FREE SERVICE”. Let’s get serious, if we as Torah Jews don’t come out against these Chillul HaShem, and allow these Hooligans to take over, then nobody can complain about it when the city closes offices and cancels services……..

  5. ill have you all know that there has been fewer accidents since the lights have been down, maybe coincidently, at those intersections. Traffic moves smoother also, like by a traffic circle.
