Deri Was Fundraising In Deal, NJ

deri3.jpgDuring his visit to the United States about two months ago, R’ Aryeh Deri was a guest of a prominent Deal, NJ businessman and he used the opportunity to raise funds for his new party, a social party that crosses political line, addressing social issues impacting all communities.

The Deal community has in the past contributed generously to Shas-affiliated institutions, especially the Yechavei Daas network headed by HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita. HaGaon HaRav Dovid Yosef, one of the Rav’s sons, stands at the head of the kollel and regularly visited the community to raise funds several times a year as a guest of one of the local prominent Rabbis, a central figure in the FBI arrests.

The daily Yediot Achronot reports that family members report Rav Dovid Yosef left the United States just hours before the FBI raids which led to the many arrests.

  1. 3,

The point is that the “news” paper is trying very hard to make a link between the ones who were nebach arrested and the frum people in EY.

Did you expect anything better from this rag?

  2. Jews. Democracy is not our haven. Yemot Hamashiach is not a democracy. It’s time that we realize democracy will target any group that does not have a vote. Cigarette smokers, or even Jews. Do we know what’s in store next? Does YWN actually think that this is only Syrian and Shas? Are kidneys Syrian? Does YWN know that jews from all walks of life are constantly getting alms in syrian shuls? They happen to be extremely generous by nature. Something about their Aram Soba background. Its not just Deri that fundraisers there its like another thousand charities.

  3. The. Syrian community is THE MOST benevolent one in the world, including to lkwd, mir & many more……sending hundreds of millions of “kosher ” dollars all over the world to chesed & torah institutions

  4. I don’t understand what the editor is trying to implicate here. Why do you have to state the Rav Yosef left “hours before”? That is absolutely terribly phrased and should be considered disrespectful and not proper Kavod HaTorah. How would you like it if I put some Ashkenaz Gadol in the same context. I’m sure there would be plenty of more complaints on this board.

As a matter of fact the Syrian community is a main supporter of many of the Ashkenaz Yeshivos and not only gives away their money freely but wholeheartedly. Don’t jump to bash an entire community who has made Kavod HaTorah and supporting Yeshivot a priority.

  5. Why is this web site publishing an article with latent loshon horoah. Here is the real story from Arutz 7:

Rabbi Yosef’s Son Resisted Dwek Bribe Attempt

(IsraelNN.com) Rabbi David Yosef, the son of Shas spiritual leader and former Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, resisted an attempt by an American businessman to suck him into a money laundering operation that eventually led to the arrest of dozens of people in New York and New Jersey.

The businessman, Solomon Dwek, was himself arrested in 2006, in connection with a scheme to bilk $25 million out of the PNC bank, which has branches in New York and New Jersey. Dwek was a real estate developer, religious school principal and philanthropist from Ocean Township, New Jersey.

As part of a plea bargain arrangement with federal prosecutors, he turned state’s witness and wore a “wire” while attempting to snare others in the web of intrigue. According to a report on Sunday by News One, Dwek came to the younger Rabbi Yosef, claiming that he did not even have enough money to buy food and that the rabbi was obligated to save him by doing business with him. The transaction involved a $25,000 check, which Dwek offered to cash in exchange for a percentage as a fee.

The rabbi was careful enough to refuse and said he did not deal in such matters. Both Rabbi Ovadia Yosef and his son, Rabbi David Yosef, are deeply respected in the Sephardic Jewish communities abroad, as well as in Israel.

The attempted solicitation, which came as part of a 10-year investigation by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), was recorded – as were dozens of others. The probe ended in a massive sting operation last week by 300 agents, who arrested five rabbis and three mayors, rocking the Syrian Jewish communities in New York and New Jersey as well as residents of three major cities.
