New York City is moving to strengthen penalties for drivers who leave the scene of an accident.
The City Council voted Wednesday to increase civil penalties for hit-and-runs.
Under the legislation, a fatal hit-run accident would trigger a penalty of up to $15,000. The bill also creates a new set of penalties for repeat offenders.
In a related move, the council has approved legislation requiring police to compile more data on hit-run crashes.
