In an interview with Kikar Shabbos News, Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Yossi Deutsch stated the government has failed to protect the citizens of Yerushalayim from terror attacks, commenting less than a day following a vehicular ramming attack near the city’s central bus station.
Deutsch explained that while the situation compels fortifying bus stops to block the vehicles of terrorists, the government has failed to prevent the attacks – to deter the terrorists from striking out. He laments the fact that the only action on the part of the government is a response, a defensive one such as the placement of concrete blocks at bus stops to block vehicles. “This is not how one combats terror” Deutsch exclaimed.
The chareidi deputy mayor admits he is far from an expert in counter-terrorism, but states confidently that many if not most residents of the capital no longer walk about with a sense of security.
Clearly the situation has dumfounded security experts somewhat, as the experts have already stated that unlike during the so-called intifadas when they had to combat terror organizations, the attacks plaguing Israel since erev Rosh Hashanah 5776 are carried out by children and other lone individuals who simply get up and decide to become martyrs.
Deutsch states he speaks with residents and there is fear among many and while he is not an expert, clearly what is being done is insufficient for the terror attacks continue.
