Turkey’s Leader Signals Normalizing Relations with Israel May be Good for the Entire Region

tpmTurkish President Tayyip Erdogan told journalists that “normalization [of diplomatic relations] with Israel may be possible and serve the interests of the region.

Perhaps it was the downing of a Russian fighter plane by Turkey which led to existing tensions between Ankara and Moscow that prompted his statement as Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told journalists on board a flight returning from Turkmenistan that “normalization with Israel” is a possibility. He of course stipulated this will depend on Israel.

It would appear Mr. Erdogan remains unwilling to back down from his demands when he severed ties with Israel over the Mavi Marmara flotilla incident. Now he explains if Israel is willing to compensate the victims of the naval flotilla and lift the marine blockade on Gaza, his country might look towards resuming diplomatic relations with Jerusalem.

Turkey broke off relations with Israel after the flotilla that intended to break the Israel Navy blockade on Gaza was boarded by naval commandos. After being attacked, the force responded and nine Turkish nationals were killed. Since that time, Turkey has used every possible opportunity to speak out in the international arena against Israel.

Turkey and Israel were at one point staunch allies, participating in joint military exercises as well as being tied economically. Turkey in the past was a favorite tourist venue for many Israelis due to its proximity and attractive prices however following the Marvi Marmara and the IDF’s counter-terrorism operations in Gaza, all this has changed.

  1. “if Israel is willing”

Israel shouldn’t even THINK about this. Turkey should apologize to Israel for allowing one of its national’s ships to try to aid Hamas.

  2. Erdogan is a “sonei Yisrael’ like the rest of his cohorts. The only reason he’s making positive overtones is because he is “shaking in his pants” that the Russian bear will flex it’s muscles and guess who’s on the receiving end?
