Israel naval gunboats on Tuesday traveled through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea, a move that was coordinated in advance with Egyptian authorities, an act seen as a clear warning message to Iran.
Two Sa’ar gunboats were reportedly seen passing into the canal, the second time that Israel has taken such action, with the previous known case being last month, when a Dolphin class submarine traveled through the canal as well.
While declining to offer an explanation for the move, Egypt’s foreign minister confirmed reports that the Israeli gunboats passed through the region with the knowledge of officials in Cairo, adding Egypt cannot prevent the movement of Israeli vessels in the canal.
