Vanunu Seeking Freedom to Travel

Convicted nuclear spy Mordechai Vanunu on Monday filed a petition with the High Court of Justice, seeking to lift a travel ban that prohibits him from leaving Israel. The ban began in 2004, when he was released from prison after serving time for an espionage conviction which included Vanunu’s revealing classified information pertaining to Israel’s nuclear program. The restrictions also prohibit him from meeting with foreigners without permission from the government.

Vanunu agreed to withdraw his petition after the court advised him that he may appear again in six months, at which time the matter would be reviewed, advising him that during the interim period, to refrain from discussion regarding classified security matters.

The state told the court that Vanunu is proof that one who rebels against the law does not usually change and warned he will continue to disclose classified information whenever given the opportunity.
