Haaretz’s top story on Thursday addresses the statements from IDF Chief Rabbi Brigadier-General Avichai Ronsky, who explained that in his personal view, the IDF is no place for a Jewish female. According to Haaretz, the statement was made two weeks ago at a conference attended by frum women.
Haaretz quotes the rav as saying that no poskim permit women to serve, adding that Rabbi Ronsky has since denied the statement attributed to him. The newspaper’s report adds that while most rabbonim, Ronsky’s predecessors would have agreed with him, they were too wise to utter such words in uniform. The paper also quotes one woman who called the military’s chief rav a “hypocrite”, explaining he met his wife in the IDF when she was a clerk.
