Every summer when New York City residents flock to the Catskills in July and August, the population of Sullivan County rises from its year round population of 75,000 to 250,000.
Emergency medical services must plan for that massive influx and Sunday, fire, police, EMS and county emergency services leaders met to discuss safety and customs issues with representatives of the Orthodox Jewish community.
Monticello Fire Chief Marc Friedland said their number of calls skyrockets during the summer.
That department averages between 1,350 and 1,400 calls per year. Call volume doubles during the summer months.
Local officials also discussed protocols with the Hatzalah ambulance service as well as the availability of the Lifenet 75 helicopter at Catskill Regional Medical Center for persons in need of emergency transportation to another hospital.
