Moetzas Gedolei Yisroel of Agudas Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael Convenes on Sunday

moetThe Moetzas Gedolei Yisrael of Agudas Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael convened on Sunday, 3 Kislev, to discuss a timetable for the current coalition to amend the draft law in line with demands by chareidi parties, which were accepted in coalition agreements.

The matter is one of urgency as it is now clear to the chareidi lawmakers that the amended draft law cannot be passed into law prior to the state budget. They had planned to make their support for the budget contingent on passing the draft law, providing the chareidim with significant leverage, but this is not going to be the case as was reported last week by YWN-ISRAEL.

The bill will be approved in the Ministerial Law Committee and pass its first reading in Knesset, but this is not sufficient to reach a third and final vote in Knesset before the chareidim will have to raise their hands in support of the budget.

In a meeting with Health Minister Yaakov Litzman and other chareidi representatives, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Thursday night, the eve of 1 Kislev, explained to them it is not logistically possible.

The admorim will have to decide if they will compel the prime minister to pass the amended draft law first as he committed to do in writing, or if they will take his word and rely on a promise that it will pass after the budget is approved.

  1. Why do we only read about the moetzes gathering to discuss politics? Do they ever get together to discuss Torah? Like shor shnagach es haparah or psulei hamukdashim?

  2. @M – And if they wouldn’t get together to discuss, I would see a post complaining how there’s no achdus among the Admorim, or how their MKs act on their own without the guidance of their leaders, or how they don’t get involved in their country, that they are not patriotic or don’t care. .

  3. Shuali — it is wonderful that our greatest leaders get together to discuss matters of national importance. Achud is great. I lament that the only times I hear gedolim getting together it is for matters of politics, parnassah, shidduchim, etc, etc — everything other than learning Torah. Ki heim chayeinu v’orech yameinu — Torah, not politics.
