Former Mayor Ed Koch is having surgery to replace a heart valve.
Spokesman George Arzt says the surgery is being done Friday at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Koch’s surgeon is Dr. Craig Smith, who performed a bypass on former President Bill Clinton in 2004.
Koch, who’s 84, suffered a heart attack in 1999.
He served as mayor of New York City from 1978 to 1989.
During that period, he was famous for asking New Yorkers: “How’m I doing?”
Koch told Mayor Michael Bloomberg earlier this week that he’s doing fine under the circumstances.
He said he has confidence in his doctors and is looking forward to getting out of the hospital.
