MTA Taking Action To Prevent Machines Against ‘Funny Money’

mta1.jpgMTA officials are in a mad dash to update cash slots on the more than 1,600 MetroCard machines throughout the city because they soon won’t be high-tech enough to spot the newest generations of counterfeit bills, an agency report says.

Without the tweak, officials claim, millions of dollars in funny money could soon be passing through the system.

“Without an upgrade,” the report warns, the machines, “have the potential of accepting up to $60 million in counterfeit bills annually.”

In the past, an MTA contractor has retrofitted the machines with US Treasury-approved software updates. But starting next year, the company will no longer fix the obsolete cash slots, the report said.

Instead, the MTA is considering a more expensive electronic fix to the problem, estimated to cost $3.3 million dollars. Physically replacing the slots would cost more than three times as much.

MTA officials say that past software updates have allowed the machines, which take in more than $100 million in cash each month, to reject all phony bills.

The agency’s board will vote on funding at its meeting on Wednesday.
