About 1,000 people took part in a protest outside the NYC headquarters of the Red Cross on behalf of Gilad Shalit, calling upon the international agency to act.
Demonstrators, primarily high school students, demanded that the international humanitarian organization get more involved, to meet with Shalit and to address the unacceptable conditions of his incarceration, some 35 months in Hamas captivity without anyone visiting to confirm that he is alive and in good health.
The demonstrators questioned why the Red Cross is involved in assuring that conditions for Hamas prisoners in Israel meet international standards while nothing seems to be done regarding Shalit.
