Vice Prime Minister/ Minister of Strategic Affairs (Likud) Moshe Ya’alon and political supporters on Tuesday sent a warning message to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. As the prime minister attempts a juggling act to appease the White House while remaining loyal to right-wing supporters, Ya’alon and a number of others met on Tuesday and expressed their opposition to the so-called ‘two-state solution’, stating it is an unacceptable formula.
Ya’alon believes that moving forward in any diplomatic process with the PA (Palestinian Authority) must be based on the PA’s willingness to accept Israel as a Jewish State and for PA leaders to exhibit leadership abilities, and “like one builds a house, from the foundation up, to do the same in the PA”.
He added he does not see a fiscally viable Palestinian state in Yehuda, Shomron or Gaza, adding the fiscal gap between Israel and first world nations and the PA and third world nations is not a recipe for success. The risk of nurturing a hostile entity is too great he explained.
He suggests that for the foreseeable future, instead of using terms like “solving” the problem with the “failing and dysfunctional two-state solution,” terms including “problem solving” would be an acceptable substitute. Much must be done to lay the groundwork for future stability he insists, and the current mantra is not likely to lead to a good place.
Ya’alon stressed the meeting was in no way to be interpreted as an internal revolt of sorts, but he did caution the prime minister that his internal support base is not guaranteed at any price, and he mustn’t stray from the platform that got him elected to office.
