United States Vice President Joe Biden is expected to arrive for an extremely brief visit in Lebanon on Friday. He will meet with President Michael Suleiman to discuss the situation in the Mideast and bilateral relations between the two countries. The announcement of the upcoming visit was made by a “senior Lebanese government source” to the French AFP agency.
The three-hour vice presidential visit is viewed as directly connected to the upcoming Lebanese elections on June 7th. America is concerned that the Shiites affiliated with Hizbullah may emerge with a governmental majority. Washington supports the candidacy of Sa’ad Hariri, the son of slain Lebanese leader Rafiq Hariri.
Lebanese media report the vice president will be carrying a message from President Barak Obama pertaining to the White House’s position regarding new Mideast initiatives. During his brief stay, Biden will also meet with Prime Minister Fuad Siniora.
