A 5.0 earthquake struck south of Los Angeles International Airport this evening, causing significant shaking across Southern California. The temblor hit about 8:30 p.m.,a miles from the South Bay community of Lennox.
The LA Times reports that a 3.0 aftershock occurred a few minutes later near Lennox.
The temblor started 8.4 miles below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Residents in the Lennox area said china fell off shelves, but there were no reports of more serious damage. The Los Angeles Fire Department went into “emergency quake mode” as a precaution.
Hatzolah of LA activated the Earthquake Reconnaissance Unit, and a quick visual of all Shuls and Schools came back negative on damage. The team will monitor for any subsequent quakes – but as time passes LAPD and LAFD are advising Hatzolah that the chances diminish rapidly as time passes from the initial quake. YWN reminds the community that this is a good time to review their Earthquake and Disaster plans and the extra food and water to have on hand.
It’s unclear what fault the quake struck on. The Newport-Inglewood fault, which has produced several destructive temblors, runs through that general area.

As an X-Los Angelino, I am reminded of the news reports from seismic analysts saying there is good chance of “the big one” happening sometime during 2009-2010. But only The Almighty in all His Greatness will be the one to do the rattling – if He so chooses. Time will tell – and I can relate to the fear felt during the 1st few seconds.
Wake up LA the future of Israel is on the line. May be a quake of a wake up.

Hello! What you should have written is: “YWN reminds the community that this is a good time to review their Aliyah plans and the Nefesh B’Nefesh applications to have on hand.”
Sayitlikeitis (#2) has got it absolutely right. Isn’t there anybody else out there who’s getting the message? (See the following story, too: does anyone think it a coincidence that, out of 8 million people, the very first person to die of swine flu in NYC was Jewish?)
Hashem’s messages are coming fast and furious, yet we sit here frozen in our goldena medina of golus.
