hwaIt hasn’t been this hot on this day in New York City since 1919.

The National Weather Service says the temperature reached 97 degrees in Central Park at 1:38 p.m. Tuesday.

Meteorologist Carlie Buccola says that beats a record of 93 degrees that was set in 1919.

Officials say the temperature is expected to drop to around 74 degrees by nightfall.

On Monday, the city’s parks department announced that some beaches will remain open until Sept. 13.
