Compromise Likely in Kiryat Yovel Eruv Controversy

The committee seeking a mutually acceptable solution to the controversy over the Kiryat Yovel eruv is apparently about to recommend re-routing the eruv, a suggestion that will most likely be accepted by Jerusalem City Hall.

The weekly Mishpacha Magazine reports the eruv is likely to be moved outside of the neighborhood, out of view of residents who find it objectionable. Maran Rav Elyashiv is expected to be involved so any compromise solution will enjoy the support of Gedolei Yisrael.

Some askanim and rabbonim involved warn that this issue is not simply about the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of Yerushalayim, but it places the entire eruv system of the capital in danger – pointing out of the court accepts the claim of petitioners, it may order removing the eruv from the entire city.

Supporters of moving the Kiryat Yovel eruv explain it may just do the trick since the secularists who find it offensive will no longer see the poles or wire, and therefore, they should not feel as if their lifestyle is being threatened.
