The court petitions surrounding discrimination in Elad by the Zluznik Seminary has led to the enforcement of regional registration in that municipality. This means girls are assigned to high schools by the Education Ministry and Elad City Hall based on their geographical location.
Yated Neeman on Tuesday, 10 Elul reports Maran HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita is opposed to the implementation of regional registration for all seminaries. It is pointed out that chareidi girl’s high schools in Israel are referred to as “seminaries”. However, the Rosh Yeshiva has called for regional registration in Elad only due to the situation, and this is not to be interpreted as acceptance of this system in all schools.
It is added that the Yated report does not contain a copy of the letter signed by Rav Shteinman on this matter. The report states that after a number of principals of seminaries turned to Rav Shteinman for instruction, the Rosh Yeshiva expressed strong opposition to any effort to compel regional registration nationwide.
Yated explains officials in the Education Ministry and others are trying to involve themselves in the running of the seminaries and this is unacceptable for regional registration prohibits a school from determining which girls are acceptable based on their religious lifestyle, academic level and other factors.
The article stresses that Rav Sheinman ordered implementing regional registration in Elad only, and only at present due to the current situation. One is not to extrapolate that Rav Shteinman is in anyway supporting the same registration for seminaries around the country for this is incorrect.
