The CDC says swine flu has killed a 23-month-old child in Texas. It’s the first U.S. death in the current outbreak.
The flu death was confirmed Wednesday by Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It is the first death from swine flu reported outside Mexico, the country believed to be the origin of the new influenza outbreak. Besser gave no other details. U.S. officials have confirmed 65 cases of swine flu.
The infant’s death comes shortly after CDC officials warned that swine flu deaths are “likely” in the U.S.
