The NY State Police call it “Operation Hang Up,” the enforcement of the state law that prohibits the use of hand-held cell phones by motorists while driving.
From last Tuesday through Friday, troopers issued 181 tickets for observed cell phone violations while they patrolled the Thruway from the New York City line to Sloatsburg, I-95 from New York City to the Connecticut line and the Cross Westchester Expressway.
Last year, troopers issued 5,400 tickets on the Thruway for cell phone violations.
“Driver inattention is the leading factor in most crashes, and cell phone use is one of the most common driver distractions,” said State Police Troop T Commander Major Robert Meyers.
State law prohibits the use of a hand-held mobile phone while driving except to call 911 or to contact medical, fire or police personnel about an emergency. Violators who are ticketed face a maximum fine of $100, along with a $60 surcharge.

But wouldn’t it be better for the economy to let them crash first, providing parnassah to a wide variety of people (wreckers, ambulance crews, lawyers, etc.), as well as reduced unemployment (since the driver, some of his/her passengers, and the people in the car they smash would all be removed from the labor force thereby reducing the unemployment rate).
Good, learn to drive without holding the phone or even better withOUT talking on the phone.
Does this ban include using a hands free device?
#1, the way you put it, people should willingly crash even without a cell phone because so many people would be benefiting. But please don’t volunteer..

If most accidents happens because of cell phone use, why did we have accidents before cell phones was out?
This is good let State Troopers fine Drivers driving when using Cell Phones while Driving. Driving a vehicle is a privilege not a right. All Drivers need to pay attention to the road and other drivers on the road, not to their conversation.
