Barak Comes Down Hard on Labor Rebels

Angry and defeated, MK Eitan Cabel realizes in all likelihood, he will be ousted from his post as party secretary, the response from party leader Ehud Barak who is unwilling to tolerate the party rebels, of whom Cabel is a leader.

While the final decision will only come in two weeks when party leaders convene, Barak is expected to prevail. At that time, MK Amir Peretz, among the outspoken opponents to Barak, has announced he will call for party primaries to elect a new leader “as soon as possible”, hoping to persuade the party leaders to accept his challenge to oust Barak.

At the opening of Sunday’s faction meeting, Barak stated “We can return to the party’s natural place of leading the nation, even with the differences of opinion among us,” but the party leader has indeed waged a war against the rebel faction, no longer willing to tolerate their unwillingness to abide by the majority rule.

The rebels accuse Barak of ruling in an unacceptable manner, not permitting them to address the forum, firm in his goal of silencing the opposition.

Ofir Pines compared Barak’s actions to a “Bolshevik party and dictatorship”, expressing disgust over the party’s leadership practices today, under Barak.
