Trump: McCain Has Made America Less Safe

trumpRatcheting up his attack on Sen. John McCain, GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump said McCain has abandoned the nation’s veterans and made America “less safe” through his votes in Congress.

In an opinion pieced published Monday in USA Today, Trump also lashed out at his fellow GOP presidential hopefuls who have criticized his remarks, calling them “failed politicians.” Trump said he did not need “to be lectured by any of them.”

The op-ed comes as Trump is on the defensive for dismissing McCain’s reputation as a war hero because McCain was captured in Vietnam and “I like people who weren’t captured.”

On a contentious appearance on the “Today” Show Monday, Trump took issue with the media’s reporting on his comments about McCain’s war record, made at a conservative forum in Iowa.

  1. Although you’re not on my radar for a vote in the primaries, THANK YOU for having the guts to say things that lots of people want to say!

  2. McCain’s military record was not stellar prior to being shot down and captured. He crashed a Plame into a ship and was not held accountable. Also I don’t believe he was ever fit for office as a senator much less president. I say this based on my experience in the U.S Air Force during the Vietnam War. It was common knowledge that anyone who survived as a prisoner of war was never put into positions where other soldiers lives were at stake They were placed in administrative positions. They were considered “damaged goods”. So in a way Trump has a point. Also,McCain has really not been a true advocate for veterans. It’s all for show and power, pure politician in all the negative connotations that politician is defined. He’s more concerned about the illegals than veterans. I live in Arizona and ashamed to say he’s been elected and reelected too many times. I wish he’d retire

  3. Re comment no. 3: You utterly misunderstand the problem with Trump’s insult of McCain. Yes, McCain is “damaged goods” as a result of his torture and mistreatment at the hands of his Hanoi captors. But he was “damaged” defending you and me and that thing on Trump’s head, and he acted courageously in doing so. I don’t like Mr. McCain’s policies or voting record, but he acted heroically when Trump and I were thanking our good luck in getting lotteried out of the line of fire.
