Sgt. Barkai Yishai Shor HY”D was an avid volunteer in Magen David Adom. He fell during operation Protective Edge. Last week, he was remembered during a ceremony to dedicate a new MDA ambulance in his name. The event was held on Thursday, 22 Tammuz in the Jerusalem MDA station.

During the ceremony which was attended by family members of the fallen soldier and senior MDA officials, the new ambulance was dedicated to the station in the capital. Also present were members of the Bnei Akiva branch in which Shor was an instructor.

Sgt. Shor was 21-years-old when he was killed in operation during an exchange of gunfire with terrorists in a community in the Shar HaNegev Regional Council. He began volunteering at MDA at the age of 15 and continued during his military service. He would volunteer whenever he was off from the IDF. He worked as an EMT and dreamed of becoming certified as a driver. Ironically, his certification to drive an ambulance arrived at the family home on the day he was killed.

His father explained during the ceremony how MDA was a second home for Barkai and how proud he was when he received a certificate of excellence for his volunteer activities. He added that he took his first first-aid course as a young member of Bnei Akiva. Mr. Shor added that it was clear to him that donating an ambulance in his late son’s name is the appropriate thing to do due to son’s love for the organization and volunteering as an EMT.

MDA Jerusalem Chief Brigadier-General Shlomo Petrover addressed the event as did MDA President Avi Zohar and MDA Chief Eli Bin.
