Mayor Mike Bloomberg was endorsed today by the Bukharian Jewish Congress, an organization founded in New York City in 1999 by immigrants of Central Asia.
Serving 40,000 Bukharian Jews and based in the Forest Hills area of Queens, the Bukharian Jewish Congress works on behalf of the needs of the community. Forest Hills is also the home of the Bukharian Jewish Center servicing local residents.
“The Bukharian Jewish immigrant community is particularly concerned with their ability to nurture their culture, tradition and religion since they have made New York City their home,” said President of the Bukharian Jewish Congress Boris Kandov. “Mayor Mike Bloomberg has always taken the time to understand and listen to our community and under his direction we have seen improvements; safer streets, services to the most vulnerable amongst us and greater economic opportunities. We know that tough times lie ahead but we are confident that the best person to lead us through this will be our current Mayor. It is because of this that we have decided to endorse Mike Bloomberg for Mayor.”
“The fact that Bukharian Jews make New York City their home, says that our City continues to be a place where people of all backgrounds and experience can come and live freely pursuing their aspirations and ambition while still preserving their culture and heritage,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “The Bukharian Jewish Congress is 40, 000 strong and proven to be a force for the needs of this community. It is an honor to be endorsed by them.”
Mayor Bloomberg’s new Business Solution Centers established in 2004 have served more then 5,000 businesses in Queens. In an effort to enhance and preserve the quality of life in Queen’s neighborhoods, 111 acres of parks have been added and 74,000 trees have been planted in Queens. Additionally, since 2002, crime is down 33% throughout the borough.
The Bukharian Jewish Congress joins a number of people and organizations endorsing the Mayor for re-election including: Mayor Ed Koch, Reverend A.R. Bernard, Dr. Calvin Rice, New York State Senators Frank Padavan and Marty Golden, former City Councilmember Madeline Provenzano, Borough President James Molinaro, Assemblyman Lou Tobacco, Crown Heights Youth Collective President Richard Greene, the Vaad Harabbonim of Flatbush Political Action Committee and community leaders Joyce S. Johnson and Virginia L. Montague.

If only Mayor Mike could stop the Bukharians from building such hideous McMansions all over Queens. But it’s probably the do nothing council that controls zoning, not the mayor.
But this is a good endorsement by a relatively new voting block in our community.
