The field of education is one which has been rapidly growing and developing over the past few decades, and today, Boruch Hashem, there is a tremendous variety of techniques and methods available to help the struggling child, and even adult, overcome reading and other learning challenges. However, having the educational means to alleviate these challenges is only one part of the equation. More important, even, is to have a sufficient amount of properly trained teachers and tutors available to work with those that need help.
With the proliferation of courses and programs being offered, it becomes difficult to choose. The Multi – Sensory Kriah – Kesiva Course is a research-based system designed to take the learning disabled child or adult all the way from aleph bais through the fluent reading of Rashi script. Designed by Mrs. Rivky Katz, director of the Tutoring Program at Bais Rochel of Monsey and incorporating techniques used in the Orton-Gillingham, Slingerland, and Lindamood-Bell LIPS; this course has been incredibly successful in training regular classroom teachers wishing to help their students achieve their utmost in reading, special education instructors, and women and girls wishing to teach kriah on a one-on-one basis. The program has Baruch Hashem met with incredible success, and the annual summer training classes, now in their twelfth year, have become extremely popular in Brooklyn, Monsey and Lakewood with participants coming from all across the country and even from overseas.
As important as reading fluently is for girls and women, for boys and men it is as vital as the air they breathe. With Torah and Tefilla an integral part of a man’s life, leaving a learning disability unaddressed can be catastrophic. In the best of cases it can sorely test his self esteem, and in the worst case it can cause him to fall by the wayside; we need not elaborate. Upon the urging of many Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshiva who recognized the critical need to address this issue across the board, Multi-Sensory Kriah – Kesiva classes were launched for bachurim and yungeleit in Monsey, N.Y. Given by Rabbi Tzvi Fischer, Rosh Kollel of the Portland, Oregon, Kollel, this course has become increasingly popular over the last several years. Whether it is Rebbeim wishing to insure that all of their talmidim progress satisfactorily or yungerleit seeking to cultivate a source of income, the course is suitable for all. Rabbi Fischer’s experience as a Rav and Rosh Kollel and his hands-on involvement with education and kiruv in his congregation and community make him an extremely competent and well-liked instructor.
