daninoIsrael Police Chief Yochanan Danino is stepping down from his post on July 1, 2015. Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan has yet to announce who will be replacing the outgoing head of the nation’s police force. Danino was supposed to have already retired but his tenure was extended due to 20th Knesset elections. 1. This is a very important post and all members of the coalition should be extremely particular about who fills it.

The new police chief should serve at the pleasure of all parties in the coalition, particularly United Torah Judaism, and they should have the power to fire him immediately. In addition all parties in the coalition should have the right to review all police operations especially political corruption probes. The political system should have unrestricted access to police records including those relating to current operations with the right to challenge them. They should also have the right to investigate police criminality and require speedy and decisive action be taken.

The idea of an independent police force is insanity. It amounts to giving a hunting license to predators.
