Calling it a “contemporary symbol of divisiveness and racism,” eBay said Tuesday that it will ban the sale of Confederate flags and similarly themed merchandise.
“This decision is consistent with our long-standing policy that prohibits items that promote or glorify hatred, violence and racial intolerance,” said eBay spokeswoman Johnna Hoff.
The e-commerce company is the latest to prohibit the sale of Confederate merchandise following Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Sears Holdings Corp. The shooting deaths of nine black church members last week in South Carolina has reignited debate on what the flag symbolizes.
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said this week that the Confederate flag should be removed from the Statehouse grounds
EBay Inc., based in San Jose, California, said it will begin notifying sellers of its decision and begin removing items that contain the Confederate flag on Tuesday. A search for “Confederate flag” brought up 1,400 listings, including pins, watches, ties, hats and sunglasses with an image of the flag on it.
Rival Amazon.com Inc., which also sells Confederate flags and other items on its site, did not respond to requests for comment.

Cuz we all know that confederate flags and guns kill people.
My mother grew up in the south.
The flag symbolizes
standing up to standing up to Washington dominance,NY,big media, etc.
It symbolizes monolithic northern capitalistic middle class cutthroat mores.
It symbolizes values of sectoral honor, sacrifice for ideals
Even in the days of Jim Crow,Booker T. Washington and G W Carver were admired throughout most of the South.
Perhaps if there were another alternative that honorable gentlemen such Dr. Carson could have affinity for , a change might be desirable.
The confederate flag means much more than just racism that the haters OF the south or the haters in the south may wish
In the meantime, hold off on the flag . It may be needed after the coming Court ruling.

MUGSISME: How’d you like some statehouse to sport a nice shiny swastika flag? Of course, that flag didn’t kill anybody either.
Re comment no. 1: Swastikas don’t kill people either, so I guess you would have no problem with the sale of Nazi flags.
You obviously haven’t seen the Nazi paraphernalia that sells on eBay.
Freedom of speech means freedom of speech. Even that which we find despicable. You want the government deciding what’s acceptable and what’s not, cuz I don’t.
I don’t like swastikas any more than you do. But are you going to demand that history be erased and magically 6 million dead Jews will come back to life because there is no more swastikas? Getting rid of the confederate flag isn’t going to erase history. Actually, it was the democrats who supported the confederate flags, as well as slavery.
That said, there are certain quilt patterns I will never buy, because they look like swastikas to me. Does that mean they should be banned from eBay???
