Brooklyn – Council Member Simcha Felder urges Brooklyn residents to take advantage of free and low-cost tax preparation sites located around the City. Certified tax professionals are be available at these sites to help taxpayers prepare their basic federal and state tax returns and help filers claim special credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and the New York City Child Care Tax Credit.
The City’s Tax Prep Plus program offers eligible City residents professional assistance with tax returns for only $20. Families with dependents who earned less than $55,000 and individuals who earned less than $30,000 last year are eligible to visit a Tax Prep Plus site.
City residents with dependents and who earn less than $45,000, as well as individuals who earn less than $20,000, are also eligible for free income tax preparation at one of the city’s 54 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. Volunteers at the VITA sites will help residents file for the tax credits for which they qualify including the Earned Income Tax Credit and the New York City Child Care Tax Credit.
“These programs are a quick and affordable way to get help with tricky tax returns,” says Felder. “No one should miss out on tax credits they deserve.”
Residents can call 311 to locate free and low-cost tax preparation services and file for refund-boosting credits.

I like Simcha Felder, I really do. He gets the job done. But the best thing that could be done to the budget is to cut expenses. But, don’t hold your breath.
