Israel Police northern district received a report on 16 Iyar 5775 that a Sefer Torah was stolen from the shul in Ziff Hospital in Tzfas. Israel Police Northern District Commander Chief Superintendent Yoram Azoulai made the case a priority and on 17 Sivan he announced the stolen Torah was recovered Baruch Hashem.
Police explain they were able to learn the identity of the thief and an arrest warrant was issued on the day of the theft. The 45-year-old thief was apprehended this week in Yerushalayim. Police on Wednesday morning 23 Sivan arraigned the suspect in a Kiryat Shmona court.
Azoulai told the press “The theft and attempted sale of a Sefer Torah is a despicable act and even outside criminal ethics. The affront here is religious, moral and monetary. From the day the complaint was filed I used all resources at my disposal to apprehend the thief and return the Sefer Torah to the shul”.
