HHS Chief: Onus On Congress, States If Health Aid Annulled

heaThe Health and Human Services secretary says it will be up to Congress and the states to decide what to do should the Supreme Court annul federal subsidies that are a cornerstone of President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Sylvia Burwell’s remarks Wednesday to the Republican-led House Ways and Means Committee underscored the Obama administration’s effort to keep pressure on the GOP should that financial assistance be struck down. Republicans run Congress, and 26 of the 34 states likely to be most affected if the subsidies are annulled have GOP governors.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule this month on a suit by conservatives asserting that the subsidies are only legal in states that are running their own insurance market places. More than 30 states use the federal HealthCare.gov.

  1. There they go- ride the moral high horse and give everyone the guilt trip. One thing we can allow; they’re consistent in their strategy.
