While it is not yet known when the Labor party will hold primaries, some who view themselves as candidates for the party leadership position are busy preparing for the event. Just last week Labor MK Shelly Yacimovich called on her supporters to register for the party to permit them to vote in the primaries.
Rookie MK Eyal Ben-Reuven appears to be preparing for the primaries as well. He has submitted a bill that intends to reduce the ‘cooling down’ period for persons entering the political arena from the security establishment from three years to 18 months. Ben-Reuven is a retired IDF general.
The law prevents high-ranking officials from entering Knesset after leaving the security establishment for three years. It is relevant to the head of the Mossad, director of the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet), IDF Chief of Staff, officers of the rank of major-general and the equivalent in Israel Police.
According to the Ynet report, the bill is intended to permit former IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz to run for the party leadership position.

As long as Labor remains a party devoted to preserving the status of the secular Ashkenazi upper class, being soft on national defense and favor discredited socialist policies that failed the last time Labor was in charge — all they are arguing over is who will be head of the opposition.
