A year after a massive crane collapse in Manhattan, the 19-story condo tower that had been under construction remains unfinished.
The city will mark the first anniversary on Sunday of the devastating collapse that demolished a town house and killed seven people on March 15, 2008. The accident helped focused attention on construction safety in the city.
Survivors and elected officials are expected to hold a vigil on Sunday afternoon.
Work on the Midtown Manhattan tower where the crane had once loomed remains stalled pending approval of the developer’s revised plans to comply with zoning.
A city report concluded Wednesday that workers used the wrong kind of slings and put them in the wrong place on the crane. That report backed federal and criminal probes.

“Work on the Midtown Manhattan tower….remains stalled pending approval of the developer’s revised plans to comply with zoning”
This is the problem with this city & its mayor. A whole year has gone by and a job site sits empty. With an economy the way it is, a job site like this one would employ hundreds of workers plus it would stimulate the surrounding food businesses. BUT NO!!! We are going to make it safe by re-reviewing the zoning for compliance!!! FOR A YEAR!! That will make the city safe!!! They just don’t get it. Constuction sites are not nursery schools, they are dangerous places. That’s why adults with hard hats work there. The city is punishing themselves & all its citizens.
