Sunday Afternoon News Briefs from Eretz Yisrael


A bus driver was placed in custody after assaulting a policeman that issued him a summons. The bus driver, employed by Dan, was stopped over the weekend by Petach Tikvah traffic police who observed him committing an offense.

**A Shabbos fire in a Moshav Tzoren shul was caused by an electrical short circuit. Residents report that heroic efforts by firemen were successful and there was no damage reported to sifrei Torah.

11:55am: A Kassam rocket landed in an open area in southern Israel. No injuries reported.

**Six Egyptian nationals inside Israel illegally are suspected in Netanya area break-ins. The suspects are members of the Bedouin community.

**250 Bet Shean civil servants protested outside the Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday after not receiving their salaries in two months. They plan to establish a protest tent in Jerusalem as well.

**Close associates of Binyamin Netanyahu announce that while Likud may sign coalition agreements with right-wing parties, the door for a broad-based coalition remains open at this time.

**Likud MK and likely cabinet minister in the incoming government Dr. Binyamin Begin on Sunday visited communities in the Shomron Regional Council including Har Bracha, Rechalim and Elon Moreh.

**Kadima leader Tzipi Livni in response to Likud calls to join coalition stated Kadima and Likud must reach basic agreement on diplomatic issues, including Kadima’s demand that Likud recognize the ‘two-state solution’ concept pertaining to talks with the PA. 

**Following Sunday coalition talks, R’ Yaakov Litzman reports “good talks” and he is confident if they meet every day, a deal will be reached by the end of the week.

**Shaul Mofaz on Sunday visited the Shalit tent outside the Prime Minister’s Residence, reiterating his support for terrorist exchange for Gilad Shalit’s release, calling the Shalit issue one that “morally compels Israel to act”.

**Two policemen were injured, light-to-moderately, when their jeep overturned on the Minharot Tunnel Highway near the checkpoint.
