Crown Heights: NYPD Find Air Guns In A Chabad Dorm Room On Eastern Parkway

IMG-20150603-WA0233The following is via CHI:

A 911 call regarding gunshots on Sterling Place led officers guided by an NYPD helicopter into the Kvutzeh dormitory on Eastern Parkway where a number of weapons were confiscated from dorm resident.

The incident began in the vicinity of Sterling Place where police received a call about gun shots, officers from the 77th precinct quickly began searching the area and enlisting the assistance of an NYPD aviation unit.

Officers in the helicopter spotted a man enter a building on Sterling Place with what appeared to be a rifle and then lost sight of the man. In continued searches they spotted a group of people on another roof that also appeared to be in possession of a rifle and hand gun.

Unsure of the exact address officers flooded the area and entered three buildings, 749, 755 and 763 Eastern Parkway and began searching for the guns spotted by the aviation unit.

Eventually they located the guns in the dorm room of 749 Eastern Parkway in possession of a Bochur who supposedly is a student in Kvutseh. The officers confiscated two bb guns, one rifle and one pistol and issued the Bochur a criminal summons.

A dorm resident who spoke with CrownHeights.info said that the room police found the guns in, room 201, belongs to a group of Mishechistim and that many different Bochurim sleep there on different nights.

In response to an inquiry form CrownHeights.info a police source explained that air or bb guns are not illegal, but only when they have an orange tip indicating that they are not firearms. Without it officers can confiscate the guns and issue criminal summonses for carrying an imitation firearm.

  1. As a Chabadnik who lived in CH for many years, I hope the police throw the book at him. Then deport him. Unfortunately, he is Israeli so I guess he’ll end up here. Just what this country needs. Maybe draft him & teach him responsibility; and yes, you CAN be frum in the army.

  2. This article was not written very professionally, you need to read it a few times to get all the facts. The guns that were found were not real, they where compressed air powered guns (not illegal). Whoever heard the ‘gunshots’ either doesn’t know what gunshots sound like (BB gunshots do not sound real) or someone else has real gun. The cops didn’t want to admit they made a mistake, so they made an arrest.

  3. Its important to get the story correct.
The bachurim were playing on the roof with two BB guns. They had as well a air gun. Nothing Illeagal at all about that. They were confiscated becuase they didnt have a orange tip (it probably fell off). Im surprised that the yeshivaworld trusts crownheights.info as a reliable source for anything. they have a agenda do try to shed negative light in meshichistim. They crate stories they don’t report stories. they have a personal reason behind this (the shomrim 6 story). the owner of crownheights.info is a shomrim member who crossed his boundaries in that same dormitory and was almost put in jail for 6 years because of it. for some reason the two other chabad news websites had a different story. check for yourself collive.com and chabadinfo.com
please dont report stories from crownheights.info

  4. Mydwolf: BB guns require a license in nyc. Owning one without a license is illegal and you can get arrested for doing so.

  5. OK folks: here is a little education about airguns, bb guns, orange tips, & NYC gun laws:

    1) An airgun usually refers to a bb gun or a pellet gun. some bb guns also shoot pellets. BB’s are steel and pellets are usually lead. Both are usually .177 caliber (4.5mm) in diameter. These guns use compressed air (either hand pumped via a pump on the gun or from a small canister of CO2 attached to the gun). BB guns are considered full fledged weapons and require permits. They don’t have orange tips. Depending on the power of the gun and how much compressed air it is holding, getting shot with a bb/pellet always hurts, sometimes penetrates skin, but very rarely kills.

    2) There is also something called an airsoft gun which shoots 6mm plastic bb’s using compressed air or a spring. The bb’s are shot at very low speeds compared to a bb gun, and can give you a black eye, but won’t penetrate skin and can’t kill. I forgot how NYC treats these, but I don’t thing they consider it a weapon. These come with orange tips which can be removed, colored over, and possibly fall off.

    3) The rifle in the picture appears to be a daisy PowerLine air rifle which shoots steel BB’s and Pellets. Ironically, the model number is 880. It wouldn’t come with an orange tip and is classified as a weapon regardless. The last paragraph of this article is way off base.

  6. BB guns aren’t toys, my car was shot through by someone firing such a gun. If it can go through a car, imagine what it can do to a person. I am sure he is back on the streets & I have a very good idea who got him out. If this was a Black guy, the community would be screaming for the death penalty.

  7. You can walk into just about any Walmart other than in NYC and buy these guns. It’s illegal in NYC just as much as speeding, don’t get carried away just because it’s called a gun.

  8. Doreish HaEmes, how easy they are to buy is irrelevant. Speeding is a civil offense, and almost never puts someone in jail. BB guns are considered weapons by the NYPD and usually lead to an arrest and a record for misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon at the minimum. In some cases, a felony record. I agree with you that most BB guns are not nearly as dangerous as real guns (there are some very high powered pellet rifles which can easily kill small game and have a realistic chance to kill a human), and shouldn’t be legislated as real guns.
