Declaration of Mental Unfitness Results in Accusations of Racism

The family of the Arab taxi driver who was knifed to death in 2007 vows to continue fighting, unwilling to accept the ruling that the defendant in the case, Julian Sofer, is unfit to stand trial due to his diminished mental capacity.

According to reports, the Tel Aviv District Court accepted the medical decision which will result in Sofer being hospitalized for his alleged crime instead of standing trial.

Sofer, who has become shomer Shabbos, did not wear a yarmulke in court and did indeed act strangely, exhibiting facial characteristics and expressions of a disturbed person. The family of the victim, Ticher Karahi calls it an act and rejects the ruling that they view as the defendant’s ticket to freedom.

The state alleges that the defendant took the victim’s taxi to Tel Aviv, stopping at the Netanya home of his brother en route, where he allegedly took the knife used in the attack. According to the report, he used the knife to slit the victim’s throat and then drove the taxi back to Netanya from Tel Aviv, to his brother’s home once again.

“I did not feel anything at all. It was like slaughtering a beast” stated Sofer.

The family and their community vow to continue fighting what they view as a miscarriage of justice that is permitting the defendant to walk away from his murderous act, stating even if it takes 10 years, they will never rest.
