During severe flooding in Houston, Texas last week Shirley Wesler Alter, 86, and Jack Howard Alter, 87 were being rescued from their home when their rescue boat capsized.

Authorities have confirmed the death of the couple who fell out of their boat along Brays Bayou Tuesday morning, May 26.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter recovered Shirley’s body shortly on Tuesday morning from a tree near MacGregor Park.

The family remained in unrest as their father’s body was still missing until late Thursday night when tank workers at the Houston Ship Channel discovered Jack’s body.

The Alters’ three children and their families were notified that Jack’s body has been found on Friday morning while meeting with rabbis at Congregation Beth Yeshurun to confirm funeral arrangements.

“It hit the family hard,” said Robin Alter, one of Jack and Shirley’s daughters-in-law. “But, at the same time, it was also a relief.

“It’s good that a positive I.D. was made. If it wasn’t a positive I.D., we’d still be wondering,” she told the JHV.

A double funeral and memorial service for Shirley and Jack Alter will take place Sunday, May 31, at 1 p.m., at Beth Yeshurun synagogue, followed by a graveside service at Beth Yeshurun cemetery, 1037 N. Post Oak Rd.

Shirley and Jack Alter and their 55-year-old daughter were stranded outside a family home when flooding began on Monday night. A Houston Fire Department rescue boat picked them up at around 7 a.m. on Tuesday but minutes later, the Alters were taken away by the current after the boat tipped over, according to their daughter, who survived.

The Alters were married for 63 years. As active members of Houston’s Congregation Beth Yeshurun and volunteers at Holocaust Museum Houston they were an integral part of the community.

The death of Jack Alter, a Word War II vet, brought the total count of fatalities related to the Memorial Day flood to seven which accounts for all missing individuals, according to authorities.
