Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar expressed solidarity with those who call for a resolute response to the vandals who desecrate graves. The Tartar community of Tver launched an initiative to fight back vandals after an incident in which criminals destroyed 150 Jewish and Tartar graves at the Dmitrovo-Cherkasskoye Cemetery in Tver.
“I hope that the authorities will take real steps against these people before it is too late, before insulting the memory of our parents becomes a ‘new tradition’ in Russia,” Berel Lazar’s statement published by the press service of the chief rabbi on Wednesday said.
“These people hate everybody and first of all they want to make a mockery of what is saint to other people. In this case, they have destroyed Jewish and Tartars gravestones. And there is recent news of a pogrom at an Orthodox cemetery. Those who commit these deeds purposefully try to insult the things that are dear to other people, the memory of our parents, and our common past,” he said.
