This Sunday, May 17th from 12pm to 2pm, Councilman David G. Greenfield will host his fifth annual tree giveaway at the Boro Park Y on 4910 14th Avenue. Greenfield has collaborated with Million Trees NYC and the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) to give away 100 free trees to residents that will be planted within the five boroughs. Due to high demand, it is recommended that all who are interested in a tree pre-register online or call (718) 853 2704 if you don’t have internet access. The types of beautiful trees available are: Atlantic White Cedar Trees, Common Witchhazel, Japanese Snowbell and Flowering Dogwood. They are available on a first come, first served basis.

“I am thrilled to be giving away free trees, yet again. This tree giveaway provides my neighbors with an easy to beautify their own backyards while helping our community purify the air. Past experience shows that these 100 trees will go quickly so please make sure you sign up,” said Councilman Greenfield.

The giveaway is a part of Million Trees NYC, a bold initiative that aims to plant and maintain one million new trees in the five boroughs over the next decade. Million Trees NYC is a joint venture between NYC Parks and the New York Restoration Project. The project aims to increase the city’s urban forest by planting one million trees. This goal will be met in part through events like this where homeowners receive a tree at no cost to plant in their own yards. Trees from the event cannot be planted along streets, in city parks, in containers or on roofs. The resident or family accepting the free tree is responsible for properly watering and maintaining it.

Greenfield is committed to beautifying his 44th Council District. Since taking office, Councilman Greenfield has funded several projects to maintain and enhance the community’s streets and parks. These projects include sweeping commercial stretches to eliminate litter, tree plantings in Boro Park, graffiti removal, renovating every single playground in his district and repaving the local streets. This past fiscal year, Greenfield launched the city-wide effort known as NYC Cleanup securing over $3.5 million for the City Council’s 51 members to promote cleaner streets in their respective districts. 13th Avenue, 16th Avenue, Avenue M, Kings Highway and Coney Island Avenue are all currently being cleaned as part of Greenfield’s initiative.

“One of the most important issues that I fight for as an elected official is quality of life for all my constituents – whether that is through planting trees or resurfacing our streets. I will continue to work with our city agencies to make our community cleaner, greener and a friendlier place to live,” added Councilman Greenfield.
