A two-alarm fire early this morning damaged the Mehadrin Kosher Poultry plant at 1100 Lincoln Road in Exeter Township.
About a dozen maintenance workers were in the building when the fire was spotted about midnight in the mechanical room near the back of the facility, which is in the Exeter Industrial Park.
One of the workers said he smelled smoke, went to investigate and discovered that the machinery was on fire and the flames had already burned through the ceiling.
No one was in that area when the fire broke out, he said. The worker alerted the others, who safely left the building, and he called 9-1-1.
Dozens of firefighters as well as emergency personnel, responded. Flames were shooting from the roof when they arrived. Reiffton Fire Company Chief Robert Jordan said nobody was injured.
Workers said the machinery was new and there hadn’t been problems with the equipment.
The fire was declared under control at 1:45 a.m. today.
