Following is the Chief Rabbinate of Israel’s response to the ruling announced by Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein. Weinstein ruled that a business may hire a private hashgacha and one is not compelled to have a hashgacha by the state-run Chief Rabbinate as the law states today.
This opens the door for private hashgachos to operate in place of and not in addition to a local rabbinate hechsher.
Chief Rabbinate Director-General Elchanan Glatt stated “The Chief Rabbis met with Attorney General Weinstein and tried reaching an understanding but failed. We will insist on outside legal representation in [the Supreme] Court. It is important to understand that this decision is one that harms the authority of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel under the law and more importantly, the businesses and most of all the kosher-seeking public at large.

Very bad news.
As unreliable (by reputation) that the Rabbinate is, it still left some measure of control. Now it will be a “wild west” of hechsherim with no one being able to tell the real from the fake whatsoever.
Pity the tourist looking for a kosher place to eat.
