Marking 12 Years Since Helicopter Disaster

Today, Sunday, marks 12 years since two IAF helicopters collided in midair over the northern community of Shar Yashuv, resulting in the death of 73 military personnel, soldiers and officers. It was the largest disaster in the state’s history. The two choppers were transporting soldiers to the security zone in southern Lebanon, in difficult weather conditions, colliding in midair over the community.

Then Defense Minister Yitzchak Mordechai appointed a commission of inquiry headed by former Israel Air Force Commander Major-General David Ivry, who pointed the finger of blame against senior air force officials, senior IDF Northern Command officials and senior officers responsible for the IAF’s Yasur choppers.
