Turkish Officials Arrive in Israel to End Diplomatic Crisis

Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this week sent an emissary to Israel towards advancing efforts to restore the good diplomatic ties that existed.

Jacque Kimchi, a leader figure in Turkey’s Jewish community represented his country, meeting with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and President Shimon Peres. He was reportedly attempting to lay the groundwork for an official visit by President Gul, who is seeking to restore ties that broke down, primarily due to statements made against Israel by his prime minister, accusing Israel of war crimes pertaining to Operation Cast Lead.

In an address before the President’s Conference this week, Livni addressed the strained relations with Turkey, expressing hope that the strategic relationship that existed between the countries prior to Operation Cast Lead would be restored in the future.
