A group known as Shut It Down is taking over Union Square on Wednesday evening to stage a protest in solidarity with Baltimore and to draw attention to the death of Freddie Gray.
At around 6 p.m., Shut It Down says it will makes its way around New York City.
The group’s Facebook page suggests more than 4,000 people are expected at the protest.
The NYPD says it is aware of the plans. The department issued a statement:
“New York City is one of the safest largest cities in America. We deal with planned and unplanned demonstrations on a regular basis and support the right for people to demonstrate and voice their first amendment rights as long as they are peaceful and lawful. We encourage organizers and the community to work with the NYPD to ensure the safety of all those involved.”
