NYPD Tranquilize, Collar Coyote in Queens

coyoteA second coyote has been captured in New York — this time in Queens.

Police say they tranquilized the animal and captured it just before 8 p.m. Tuesday. The NYPD says it’s likely the same one that got away after being spotted hiding near a house Monday.

It’s being cared for at the Center for Animal Care and Control.

The capture comes after authorities collared one near a sidewalk cafe in downtown Manhattan on Saturday morning.

At least four other coyotes have been spotted in Manhattan this year.

  1. I really don’t see the problem here. They go where the food supply takes them. They are great for keeping down the rodent population in the city and they are not after humans. And of course, they will not harm anyone’s sheep here in the 5 borough. Just keep your kittens indoors, folks, and allow the coyotes to become part of a wonderful eco-system! Maybe make a program to trap, inoculate against rabies, tag ’em, and let ’em go.

  2. They have been known to eat, in addition to small rodents (such as rabbits, rats, etc.), dogs, cats and occasionally a small child. And they tend not to be afraid of people (unlike wolves). There are good reasons to discourage them from living in the neighborhood.

  3. NOt really. Here are the statistical issues from a respected source:

I am not downplaying the risks, but it is nothing compared to the dangers of feral dog packs. That is a true and existing danger, as are all the rats and mice over-producing and carrying disease.

I think people can learn not to feed the coyotes and to keep their garbages properly secure as people have to know who live in bear country, and not to approach a young pup, as the mother may decide to protect it (viciously)- I understand that.
