The announcement that outgoing Knesset Speaker (Kadima) Dalia Itzik will formally greet the president at the special session next week to welcome in the 18th Knesset has elicited the ire of many lawmakers, who question a situation that an outgoing Knesset speaker undertake such a position.
MK Mickey Eitan, who is among the veteran lawmakers, in Knesset since 1984, will be acting speaker until the new government is in place, but nonetheless, Itzik has designated herself to greet the president despite mounting opposition.
Responding to protests, Knesset directorate officials released a statement that Itzik is Knesset speaker until the opening of the session at 4:00pm and therefore, she may and will greet President Shimon Peres.
