New Jersey: Second Earthquake in Two Weeks Hits Morris County

An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.2 rocked several towns in Morris County shortly before 5:30 p.m. today, authorities said.

The second quake to hit Morris County in two weeks, this one had its epicenter about 6 miles north of Boonton, and was felt in neighboring Montville, said Scott DiGiralomo, a coordinator for the county’s office of emergency management. On Feb. 2, a 3.0 magnitude earthquake hit several towns in the Morristown area.

The actual magnitude of the quake could have been as high as 2.4, DiGiralomo said, though he is awaiting confirmation from seismic experts.

A State Police spokesman, Sgt. Stephen Jones, said he was aware of today’s quake, but that no significant damage or injury had been reported.

Montville Township emergency management coordinator Rudy Appelmann said the tremors felt mild and were not strong enough to topple objects.
